Roulette

Roulette; chance and faith, control and belief.

Belief usually acknowledges a power that’s greater than we are; proof isn’t required as belief normally reigns. In roulette a little wheel spins and there isn’t really much perceived control; when the ball stops it’s mostly down to a perception of pure chance, an element of surprise. Elation or consolation usually follows. Control can be overturned by chance at any moment; should we rush for a train, or will the train be late? Is a financial system really controlled by numbers? Are we being controlled by a digital machine? There are many balances at play.

These artworks are about catching the now, a past and a future frozen in time. They depict something that spins, forwards and backwards, slowed to a stop and then recorded. The power of the human mind might be the ultimate time machine with the ability to feel the past, the now and the future.
