Gutai

We live in a time of constant change where media and streaming can easily create the rules. Our perception of our surroundings is significantly influenced by the idea of ‘instant’; we live in a type of ‘nano-time’.

Gutai, or embodiment, was a Japanese movement of the 1950’s. It celebrated the idea of ‘instant’. The following works are about the relationship of the ‘instant’ with our human way of making sense of it. Are we searching for the familiarity of something that does not exist? Mixed media in the form of photographs, textures, drawings and other formats are combined, at speed, to create ‘mind-scaped’ environments in a type of digital mezzotint.
