Water Lilies Series One

The Water Lilies series was begun in 2023 partly in homage to the ones at Giverny at the turn of the 20th Century and partly to explore what it might mean to paint them over one hundred years later in London in a world mostly unrecognisable to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Or is it really a truly unrecognisable world? Whilst our human world develops the Lilies still grow in all of their coloured intensity and splendour. However, we often assume that nature exists in parallel to us, undisturbed. But nature isn’t undisturbed is it? The lilies at Giverny were mainly painted in blue. Today they have become pink, red, crimson and white; and sometimes translucent, as if they might be erased only to disappear forever.
